Signing Thank You

We have had many people ask about signing THANK YOU to family and friends, and also giving thanks to God during this holiday season. In the case of THANK YOU to family and friends (or kind strangers!), you will want to sign the normal thank you gesture by moving your open flat hand out and down from your face, but do so in the direction of the person you are thanking. You can remember the sign for thank you because it is similar to blowing someone a kiss when you want to thank them (and just like blowing a kiss, you would do it in the direction of the person you are thanking).

Remember that facial expressions are also important in conveying your message, so have a “thankful” or “happy” face (you can never go wrong with smiling!).

If you are giving thanks to God, you will want to use two hands to do the thank you gesture up towards the sky / heaven, gesturing to God.

Help me understand.

I have been learning ALS for 2 mounths and i am having troble with the book and the vocab? i study all the time, and i am still having trouble with the sings. I an a student. I have tring to staying after and talking to my teachers and he just makes me look at my self in a mear.

I just cant rember all of the sings that i have tough. what i am asking is, how do i rember what he tought me???

practice is the best way to get better! learn 10 words a day, and practice then LIKE CRAZY. then 10 the ext day, then 10 the next day, then bump it up to 20 or something. i know that's the way i learned!

In my city there is a Deaf social at the mall two Fridays each month. ASL students are welcome to come and practice signing with native ASL users and get help... most of the Deaf folks there are very patient and will slow down their signing and help you understand. I've made some really good friends going to these socials and it's been the best way for me to learn and remember signs.

I'm sort of confused by the mirror thing... if you're not an accurate signer, then you're just watching yourself do the signs incorrectly. And it all looks left handed. You need to find another person to practice with - preferrably someone who signs better than you so they can correct you when necessary. If there are no Deaf socials, look for a tutor or a student in a higher class? Ask your teacher if they know someone who would sign with you?

I am very hearing impaired and have taken a few beginning classes. I recently adopted a deaf dog and have been teaching him signs. Once he understood I was communicating with him his world opened up. He now knows at least 22(I show him 46) signs. He loves tricks and I want to teach him to walk backwards, back up ect.. Anyone have suggestions on the sign I should use. One handed gestures work best.
